Joseki of the week 1

(October 1, 2009 at 8:04 pm by matjet in Analysis, Joseki of the Week)

This is the second in the series of joseki that may be posted occasionally weekly.

The diagram shows a 4-3 pincer joseki. Here black plays at 5 instead of the more common a or b.

White would like to connect 2 and 4 from the above diagram, but can’t immediately succeed.

The correct move is for white to play D18 first.
Now if black saves C15, white can trade and capture D16-17,
which is usually a happy result for white.

Black-4 in the last diagram is a mistake. Black should play atari at E15.
Next white plays a nobi (d14).
Black plays a nobi to the left with B15.

The next move is a tesuji (which is mentioned in http://www.brugo.be). Also it’s the most popular move in professional go. White should play at F17. Which is a big point. Black has no choice but to connect at e16. which is rather overconcentrated but unavoidable.

next white simply defends the cutting point in the corner with B18.
And still (!) black needs to add a move at E13.

In both sequences the result is better for white. But B4 presented in your diagram is assuming that black does not know what he is doing. There’s no reason for black to play D16 if he is just planning to throw the 2 stones away.
